Awareness about breast and cervical cancer is the first step in the process of screening and early detection and treatment. There has not been a lot studies done on the level of breast and cervical cancer awareness amongst women and men in Tanzania, however, the few studies that have been conducted have shown that lack of awareness is the biggest challenge hindering early detection and treatment.

A study conducted in 2019 among women aged 35 years and above in Morogoro rural District in Tanzania discovered that only 37.7% knew about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

A study conducted in 2018 on women aged 15 – 49 years showed that rural women, less affluent women, those with limited education, and those with limited access to the formal economy were least likely to be aware of cervical cancer.


The outcome TBCF aims to achieve on awareness is to shift the current state of diagnosis of breast and cervical cancer from its late stages (III – IV) to its earlier stages (0 – II) where the disease is most curable, survival rates are highest and treatment costs are lowest

  • Knowledge sharing in various areas such as churches, work places, schools, communities, etc.
  • Health workers to be trained on how to detect cancer using Training Models supplied to health centers at District level.

Public Awareness Campaigns

Radio Campaigns

  • Partner with radio stations with the aim of running an awareness campaign that will tackle certain stigmas/myths
  • Use Mass Messaging to
    send out messages to the public on how to self check/exam and to report to health care centers in case there are suspected irregularities

Social Media, Media Outreach

Informative Web Space

  • Use of social media to help the youth understand the disease better, how to cope with a sick loved one and reduce the myths surrounding cancer
  • Use Testimonials to empower women, others affected and highlight the benefits of early detection.

Charity Walk

Breast and Cervical Cancer Charity Walks

  • Grow the existing Breast Cancer Walk/marathon. Cervical cancer walk/marathon to begin in 2021
  • Sell to a wider audience (beyond the Masaki area in Dar es Salaam) at a reduced prices to increase participation.
